¿QUESTIONS PREPARING YOUR APPLICATION?

Preparing your application for the BIND 4.0 Open Innovation and Acceleration Program? Take a look at these 3 Keys to prepare your presentation, select the best options and make your solutions clear. We want you to present your company in the best way and clarify the problems you are solving. By planning out who you can work with and targeting the needs of our Corporate Partners, your solutions will be identified clearly and quickly.

Do you have questions about who qualifies and what commitment is involved? Take a look at our FAQ page and the Terms and Conditions page to answer the most common questions and to eliminate your concerns. This program is unlike any other in our services, support, networking and commitment to success for all parties involved.

Now that you have the facts and know that it’s worth the time and effort to apply, let’s look at three key areas you can focus on for submitting a winner application.

PLAN

Watch our Corporate Partners videos to see what technology they are seeking this edition. As they will review applications and request pitches, the Corporate Partners make the final decision on which Startups are selected. It is KEY to know what they need and what challenges they present in order to target your video and application.

This is the Research stage of R&D, important for any project. In this research phase all you have to do is watch and listen, here are the solutions our Partners are seeking: https://bind40.com/partners/

PREPARE

Explain what your solution does and the differentiation and value compared to other Startups working in the same field. Apply those differences to your advantage as you present your solutions to the Partners you are addressing in the application. Remember you can select as many as 3 Corporate Partners in the form and you can address an entire industry in the video.

Share what type of help your Startup needs in order to grow and be accelerated. Our mentors and partners are willing to help you. During the selection process they will study how they can help and compliment you. We are seeking collaborations where both parties grow.

PRESENT

Explain in as much detail as possible and in layman’s terms what you’re working on and what results you plan to obtain in the near future. Try to match those results with the current needs of your favorite Corporate Partners listed on our website. Make it clear what sector(s) your solutions apply to as we have several fields of interest.

Create a video just for your BIND 4.0 application. We advise you to use the video to explain one project or product, not your entire catalogue. Personalize the video so we know who you are targeting. Maybe you choose to focus on the problems in the field and how your solution addresses it uniquely. It’s better to be clear and specific with one solution than to show too many things. Don’t worry about the quality of the video, we just want to hear in your words, what you plan to do.

Sample Videos

Below are 2 excellent application videos from some of our Startup Alumni. Inovako submitted this video as part of their BIND 4.0 Application for the 4th edition. This personalised 2 minute video from AI and Machine Vision specialists Inovako, helped us connect with their high quality solutions and how they apply to our Partners needs.

Below is an application video from one of our Startup Alumni. CounterCraft submitted this video as part of their BIND 4.0 Application, and it helped us connect with where they are as a company and where they plan to go. Take a look:

APPLY

Now that you’ve seen our tips to a successful application, you can apply for the program! If you’ve already applied and want to improve upon what you sent, drop us an email anytime. Global Startup Success Stories, BIND 4.0 Startups Keep Booming

For the 4th edition of the program, we received more than 570 applications from all over the world. From there, the BIND 4.0 Team and collaborating Corporate Partners selected 38 extraordinary Startups to develop state-of-the-art technology projects in Energy, Health, Food, and Industry sectors. Today we will focus on 4 of those incredible Startups to share how the BIND 4.0 Open Innovation & Acceleration Program attracts Internacional Startups in key industries and supports them in their immersion into the Basque Industrial Ecosystem.

Year after year, BIND 4.0 has proven to offer the connections, collaborations, contracts, and support services to young companies. Allowing them to put disruptive solutions into use in the marketplace and established companies to improve processes and their competitive edge.

Bleenco: Fruitful Networking & New Multinational Clients for German AI Startup

German Startup Bleenco

German Startup

Bleenco builds human-centered artificial intelligence software that detects human behavior and actions from video via any given camera. A great example of German ingenuity, they develop occupational safety solutions such as; personal protective equipment detection, body temperature detection, workplace ergonomics analysis, and virtual check-ins.

During the 4th edition of the program, Bleenco worked with two BIND 4.0 Corporate Partners, CAF and Unilever, and helped implement a large variety of virtual activities for them. CAF is one of the leading global providers of railway solutions and they value adaptability and flexibility to stay competitive in Industry 4.0. In factories, Bleenco monitors workers and alerts them before a potentially hazardous situation occurs.

Unilever is a key player in the food industry and home to over 100 well-known brands, they are focused on quality, digitization, sustainability, and safety in their processes. Working through their contract with Unilever, Bleenco was able to use existing hardware to help the company quickly and easily automate manual safety processes. Business Development Director, Julian Hettich, expressed how BIND 4.0 was able to help Bleenco successfully enter the Basque region marketplace and expand their clientele.

“Together with BIND 4.0 and the Basque Government we got access to an entirely new and powerful market. This allowed us to expand our business portfolio to better serve and gain multinational clients in the Basque region.”  Hettich goes on to say “The program gave us a deep understanding of the dynamics within the Basque Industrial Ecosystem. Throughout various networking sessions, we had direct touchpoints and exchanges with high-class industry leaders.”

Special Acknowledgement: During the COVID outbreak, because of their flexibility and ingenuity, Bleenco was able to develop a prototype within 3 days and go to production in 10 days for a remote thermometer system to check the temperature of each employee before entering the workplace. By using existing cameras they drastically reduced the setup and implementation phases, allowing a preventative measure to be put into place quickly and effectively.

Inovako: Computer Vision Technology Experts Establish Positive Reputation and Growth in Basque Country

Turkish Startup Inovako

Turkish Startup

Inovako are experts in detecting defects via complex surface inspection tests in the manufacturing industry using AI and deep learning methods as well as computer vision with AR/VR support. Inovako was established in 2018 in Turkey and because of the access to new marketplaces via the BIND 4.0 program, have opened an office in Vitoria to work with their clientele in this region.

“BIND 4.0 increased our company reputation, plus it increased the motivation of our team and provided us with a very good marketing opportunity in Spain” said Emin Eksi, Managing Director of Inovako. “While speaking with the new potential clients in Basque Country we always had the power of BIND 4.0 behind us, which enabled us to create trust very fast. Speaking with investors and understanding their expectations was a very valuable aspect of the BIND 4.0 Program.

Working alongside their collaborative Corporate Partner Maier Group, Inovako was responsible for implementing faster and high precision inspections of glossy chrome parts using artificial intelligence and deflectometry. Maier Group is one of the largest manufacturers of automotive components in the world, they are always seeking new ideas and businesses to innovate with. Due to their successful output at Maier, Inovako is in discussions regarding scaling up the solutions in their various plants, proving the benefits of BIND 4.0 continue to boost and positively impact international startups even after the program.

Meanwhile, at the Tubacex plant, Inovako was responsible for the detection of tiny imperfections and welding defects of large tubes using x-ray inspection methods. Tubacex is a leading company in the supply of stainless steel and nickel alloy tubular products, in our program they are focused on digitalization and smart engineering solutions. The ability to implement their precision detection technology and deep learning solutions allows Inovako to be scalable and applicable across industries.

Inovako is one of the many startups from the BIND 4.0 program who earned more than one contract during their participation. These contracts, along with the support of the BIND 4.0 Community and Basque Government officials, allow young companies like Inovako to establish trust and grow their business in our thriving Industry Ecosystem.

Nordo Robotics: Corporate Collaboration Enables Valuable Customer Relationships and Product Development

Danish Startup

Danish Startup

In the 4th Edition of BIND 4.0, Nordo Robotics worked with ITP Aero focusing on robotic as well as human and cobot solutions to perform more sustainable surface finishing solutions. ITP Aero is one of the biggest aircraft engine and components companies in the world and is always seeking state of the art technology.

Nordbo Robotics enables flexible manufacturing by developing customized robotic solutions for end users, offering both complexity and flexibility. Their solutions add value to automation by making robots intuitive, intelligent, and flexible utilizing unique sense technologies, motion tracking, computer vision and artificial intelligence.

Collaborating with established companies allows BIND 4.0 Startups the opportunity for immediate customer input allowing them to make adjustments and develop in a real customer-client setting.

Bob Rijs, Business Development Manager for Nordo Robotics shared “Being a part of the BIND 4.0 Acceleration Program with ITP Aero has been an extremely positive experience for us as the program facilitates workshops and networking sessions with companies from the Basque region. Also, being able to collaborate with a corporate organization like ITP Aero enables us to continue our development with direct and valuable customer feedback.”

Neurolabs: Artificial Vision Technology Provides Real-Time Data for Food & Retail Industries

British Startup Neurolabs

British Startup

Neurolabs develops computer vision technology for object recognition across Hospitality, Grocery, Manufacturing, and Health Tech settings. Neurolabs worked with world leaders in retail and food distribution, Grupo Uvesco, in a retail setting to use real-time visibility to prevent shelf-gap, in order to monitor and maintain products on the shelves. Through their participation in BIND 4.0, Grupo Uvesco is investing in digital transformation and innovation to continue to provide excellent customer service and quality products.

Neurolabs is pioneering the use of synthetically generated data to develop object recognition models in a drastically cheaper and faster way than the traditional approach. Because their solutions are adaptable, use real data and an existing catalog of data, Neurolabs is scalable, flexible, and accurate.

Chris Burleigm, Head of Digital Transformation & Innovation at Grupo Uvesco explained their challenge and how Neurolabs helped them implement accurate machine vision and flexible object recognition solutions.

“At Grupo Uvesco the main issue we had was regarding the visibility of our products and our shelves in our shops. We didn’t have real-time visibility and this sometimes would cause gaps in the products on the shelves, meaning they would not be available to our clients. Thanks to the artificial vision technology that Neurolabs provided we were able to monitor in real-time the shelves and this increased the visibility and awareness of what was happening in real-time in our shops. We were very happy with the results of the project and also with the collaboration with our partners at Neurolabs.”

Neurolabs are yet another example of a successful Startup acceleration. They validated their product, clarified their product to market strategy and in turn, received VC funding thanks to the collaborative partnership, mentoring, and support services they received in the BIND 4.0 Acceleration Program.

We started the BIND 4.0 collaboration while we were still in an exploration mode as a startup in terms of product-market fit (PMF). The collaboration helped us validate as well as invalidate some of our core PMF assumptions, eventually cementing our PMF. This was reflected in us being able to convey a clearer go-to-market message to potential investors, which eventually helped us secure our first VC-funded fundraising (totaling €1M).  Remus Pop, Co-Founder & COO Neurolabs.

The success of the program speaks for itself, from the Startups to the Corporate Partners, we hear the same message: The program is working!

BIND 4.0 has over 50 large collaborating companies, such as CAF, Ferrovial, EDP, Sarralle, Arcelor, ABB, Iberdrola, ITP Aero, Michelin, Quirónsalud, Siemens Gamesa, Mercedes-Benz, Unilever, Uvesco and Coca-Cola European Partners, among others, ready to review project proposals via BIND 4.0.

Presenting The BIND 4.0 Venture Club

In the latest edition of the BIND 4.0 Basque Industry Acceleration Program, we introduced another value-added resource for our Startups by giving them access to the BIND 4.0 Venture Club. The BIND 4.0 Venture Club is a group of near 20 specialized investors, whose members come from leading European venture capital firms focused on high tech startups in the areas of Advanced Manufacturing, Energy, Health Tech and/or Food Tech, and they promote new investment opportunities for early and growth-stage startups participating in the Acceleration Program.

By presenting extensive industry contacts and new funds aligned with the specializations of the acceleration program, in addition to providing financial advice for funding and negotiation, offering their insight into the advantages of the various funding options, the Venture Club completes the services portfolio of BIND 4.0 for Startups.

“We’re proud of the connections the Venture Club has made due to their expertise and alignment with the industries of our program, we provide viable, young and validated companies and the VC members connect the dots to enable the Startups to accelerate and grow,” said Amaia Martinez, member of the BIND 4.0 Coordination Team.

“Startups need funding to accelerate at the speeds the market requires of them and outside of the client-customer relationships developed in our program. The Venture Club provides funding opportunities for Startups plus guidance in what type of funding is recommended for each stage, and negotiation advice providing a type of financial mentor as needed.”

The Venture Club Adds Value

Providing startups the opportunity to accelerate their business and grow their product while validating their services and collaborating with Industrial leaders is our main goal. The BIND 4.0 Venture Club provides new funds and investment opportunities outside of the Client-Customer relationship already inherent in the acceleration program.

Because the Venture Club is composed of VC firms focused on the same sectors and industries as the BIND 4.0 Program, they are able to plan robust investor outreach and facilitate introductions to target investors. This involvement of the Venture Club in the Program helps reduce the timeline and accelerate Startup growth, by raising capital from strategically aligned investors.

Adding the opportunity to receive additional funding and support means stability and growth for Startups, the well-established Partner Companies and Investors alike.  The Venture Club provides direct contact with several investors, mainly Venture Capital firms, with real interest in the field of activity of the program. In most cases, Companies which validate their business models with relevant customers provided by the BIND 4.0 Program, require funds to consolidate and grow the Company. And the Venture Club provides these potential investors.” said Pedro Muñoz Baroja, Managing Partner of Easo Ventures, active member of the BIND 4.0 Venture Club.

The Venture Club provides additional visibility for the startups by expanding their network and reaching finance entities already specialized in the key areas of the BIND 4.0 program allowing young companies to grow with the financial support they desire.

Program Advantages, Investors Perspective

BIND 4.0 does a rigorous selection process by identifying, attracting and connecting young companies with paid clients ready to put their product or services into use in the market. This qualifying process offers a huge advantage to Investors by providing a market validated investment opportunity, in their fields of interest.

Joseba Sagastigordia of Mondragon Corporation shared how convenient it is for them as investors to find viable investments; “The Venture Club gives us the maximum in terms of efficiency; this is a concentration of new technology based companies in our areas of interest in a condensed format.”

BIND 4.0 attracts startups on the leading edge of technology innovation, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber Security, Robotics, Infrastructure Tools, etc. areas that are of great interest to Venture Club members. The members not only identify strategic investors but offer advice regarding funding options and negotiation strategies and they invest their time in the young companies and often serve as financial mentors, offering their insight to help ensure the ongoing success of the startup.

“Being actively involved with BIND 4.0 gives us access to nearly 40 Startups every year. That’s a highly curated pipeline of startups for an investor.  In return, I feel a strong responsibility to guide and mentor those startups which are in their initial stages to help them find the right fit with investors.” expressed Anindya Saha, Founding Partner of Nero Ventures, BIND 4.0 Venture Club member and mentor of six BIND 4.0 startups so far.

Logos BIND 4.0 Venture Club

Access, Credibility & Visibility

The Venture Club offers the participating startups access to different verticals, professional financial advice, and additional visibility in their expansive networks with the potential for more partnerships and funding opportunities.

Easo Ventures said one advantage for them as Investors and members of the BIND 4.0 Venture Club, is: “A very interesting deal flow, with Companies already validated by real customers. At the same time, Entrepreneurs receive advice from a really good team of Mentors.”  This summarizes the strength of the Venture Club once it is paired with the Mentoring, Trainings, Networking and Client Relationships that BIND 4.0 has worked intentionally to create.

Nero Ventures explained the strength of the Venture Club and the investors’ perspective clearly, “The alumni program has successfully accelerated a total of 108 emerging companies all through the past four editions. Being a member of the Venture Club provides direct access to all these startups. Some of whom have already grown much bigger with international clients and into their Series B and later-stage financing processes. For me, BIND 4.0 has been a multiplying network effect due to its unique sector focus and public-private positioning.”

That’s why we consider the BIND 4.0 Venture Club a newsworthy, value-added service in our already renowned Acceleration Program. If you would like to know more about our program, or to become an investor, mentor or Partner Company, we’d love to hear from you as we continue to grow our successful program each year.

BIND 4.0 Startups offer innovative solutions to tackle the effects of the global coronavirus pandemic

Startups participating in this year’s program along with BIND 4.0 alumni, with the flexibility, innovation and agility that characterizes them, are doing their part to help in the fight against COVID-19 and its global effects.

Many startups have adapted their innovative technological solutions with the aim of, on the one hand, making available to healthcare personnel the technological tools necessary to combat the lack of protective material and, on the other hand, proposing new solutions for the diagnosis and analysis of the virus. Additionally, companies are being offered the latest digital technologies and online training to allow and reinforce remote work, plus applications for the management of factories, and the maintenance of production and the supply chain, which are necessary to maintain the mandatory confinement enacted by the authorities.

Without a doubt, one of the positive effects that this terrible pandemic has caused in our society is the incredible acts of solidarity, response and innovation that have been generated by all kinds of people and companies. We are all united in the fight against the coronavirus and BIND 4.0 wants to do it’s part through technology and innovation, to help alleviate and overcome the consequences.

To find out about each and every one of the initiatives and tools created to combat the coronavirus by the BIND 4.0 Startups, please review the following list:

COVID-19 DETECTION SOLUTIONS

Bleenco (Munich) – Artificial Intelligence

This solution detects measurements directly under the tongue. For its implementation, two cameras are used: one RGB and one infrared. The RGB camera detects facial gestures and the IR camera checks the temperature just below the tongue. The average detection process time is less than 3 seconds. The system works independently of the camera manufacturer, and can be used with pre-existing cameras. For more information contact them directly at www.bleenco.com.

Inovako (Istanbul) – Artificial Vision

Thanks to their technology, they have built an artificial intelligence model that is capable of distinguishing radiographs of positive or negative patients for COVID-19. In addition, they are in the process of developing an artificial intelligence model in order to help radiology activity in a faster and more efficient inspection. HERE WE GO AGAIN!

BIND 4.0 has started it’s 4th edition and our startups have already been busy! The 2020 Edition Kick-Off Session held in January connected our new 38 Startups with alumni and mentors for a round of networking, goal-setting, teambuilding and social activities.

So far…

Our Mentors and Corporate Partners have offered business development skills and sales training and advice on perfecting the collaboration between Corporate Partners and Startups for a mutually beneficial professional relationship. Sharpening communication, negotiation and delivery of services is a vital element for young growing companies, and are some of the many areas our Mentors, Corporate Partners and Tutors offer support, insight and training.

A word from the BIND 4.0 Team…

As we begin this fourth edition of BIND 4.0, we have confidence in our Corporate Partners who have experienced the collaboration and innovation with the Startups thus far, they know how to make the Industry 4.0 pilot projects a mutually beneficial experience.

Amaia Martinez, member of the BIND 4.0 Coordination Team, shared her insight regarding the 4th Edition so far “Our Mentors, Tutors and Venture Club members are on-hand, ready to share real feedback and advice regarding, go-to-market, scaling-up, investment, collaboration and best practices, etc. We know from our experience in previous editions, the importance of establishing at the start of the program, together with the participating startups, their expectations and the importance of having a big picture of the next six months of the acceleration program.

We always emphasize the importance of participating in as many activities as possible, since this has an impact on getting the most out of their time in the program, not only making it possible to collaborate with our partner companies but also opening up possibilities for future collaborations within the Basque industrial fabric.

The Startup participants from this 4th Edition, have already formed strong alliances and have clarified their company vision and their expectations for the program and we are eager to support and accelerate them as they accomplish their goals.”

Bind 4.0 Kick-Off Session 2020

At the Kick-Off Session…

All participating Startups gathered for a week of goal-setting, networking, setting expectations, establishing connections and professional relationships as they head into the 24-week Program.

We asked them to identify some of the key areas they intend to focus on: Guidance, Real Feedback, Potential Collaborations, Synergies and Contacts in the Ecosystem, Sharing Different Approaches to Similar Issues, Improving Go-to-Market Strategy, Validating Services or Technology, Growth and Scale-up Business Practices, Sharing Ideas, Perspectives and Sharing the Journey with Colleagues.

Here’s what’s in store…

In the month ahead, our 38 Startups from the 4th Edition will have the opportunity to attend more in-depth workshops based on their sector whether it be Health Tech, Smart Energy, Advanced Manufacturing or Food Tech, there are many opportunities to learn and grow. We’ll also be doing several exclusive, on-site visits to our Corporate Partners’ facilities throughout all three regions of the Basque Country.

Stay in touch…

As we head into 2020, we foresee plenty of synergies, innovation, validation and visibility for the 4th edition participants. Keep an eye on our Twitter feed for daily updates on our activities.
